Description
Launched in 1971, it was originally designed for speleologists and cave explorers, or basically people who where in the dark (That must be a large target audience!). If you are in the dark for longer periods of time, you may lose track of AM/ PM time. The explorer's orange GMT hand always shows you 24 hour time. But you can set it to show a different time zone by pressing the 3 and 9 o'clock positions.
The bezel does not rotate, so this one is essentially a 'caller' GMT and not a 'Flyer' or 'Pilot' GMT.
I improved the usability of this one by adding bigger zones for the GMT hand, and adding haptic feedback (vibration). Comes in handy when you're in the dark. In a cave. ;-) It's really nice to see/ feel how easy and quick it is to check a second time zone.
I took a different design approach for this one. The watch face is built with 'real' parts. Bezel, dial and date where taken from real replacement parts. I always use vector paths to lift the hands from the dial (to keep the patina of the original), but this time I exported the vector paths. Precision is very high. I did not add the date bubble. In my eyes, it's an ugly -although useful- feature. I was surprised at how inaccurate the date dial functions. Date tends to jump around a bit, although it's an 'original' part. Maybe it is lens distortion in the photograph.
It is quite funny how many names collectors come up with to describe dials, hands et cetera. This watch is nicknamed 'Steve McQueen', but he was never seen wearing one. Contrary to this Submariner /gtr/view/36806
Further this dial has the sought after 'frog foot' logo, referring to shape of the Rolex crown. It is however not a 'railroad' dial where the c's of the 'certified chronometer' are aligned. People pay extra for this. Really.
Very nice, very usable GMT. Cheers!
UPDATE: there were two extra lumens on the night dial at 6 and 12 o'clock. Removed them, but making previews for scripted watches is cumbersome, so I did not update the preview.
