Descripción
Just a quick one to test a new way of cleaning up dials with gradients. Often it really is a pain to get a 'clean' dial. Shadows really go a long way, and when you think you're done you end up with a smudgy dial that needs a lot of extra work. Here I used a gradient layer to get rid of (most of) the hands. Works really well.
This is obviously a Panerai, but I did not erase anything. There's just no brand name on it. I like it.
The dial with the mix of Roman and Arabic markings is called a California dial.
I always thought originally Panerai made these, but apparently Rolex and Omega used them too in their early models (30's). It was designed for extra legibility in low light conditions.
Called the 'high visibility' or 'error proof' dial, it became popular in WWII.
There was a revival of this dial in the 80's, and Rolex could not keep up with demand. A watch refurbisher in California jumped in to change the dials. That's when the California name got stuck.
As hard as it is to get rid of shadows in the source material, I put a lot of effort in bringing them back in. Without, the watch face looks really flat (like the preview).
The 'live' version looks much better.
