Oficialmente, o Clube Náutico Capibaribe foi fundado em 7 de abril de 1901. Na prática, porém, já existia desde 1898, quando dois grupos adversários de remadores recifenses decidiram unir forças, criando uma só sociedade. Em 1905, foi a vez de os alvirrubros entrarem em campo, estreando no futebol, esporte em que a instituição também se tornou tradicional, sobretudo com o vice-campeonato da Taça Brasil de 1967 e com o hexacampeonato pernambucano, entre 1963 e 1968. Historicamente, o vermelho e o branco estão presentes no uniforme da equipe, seja no remo, esporte que deu origem ao Náutico, seja no futebol. O Timbu, mascote adotado pelo clube, tornou-se conhecido nacionalmente na década de 1960.
