Half-Life (styled as HλLF-LIFE) is an electronic science-fiction game developed by Valve Corporation, the company's debut product and the first in the Half-Life series. In it, players take on the role of Dr. Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist who must fight to flee a secret and underground research center whose experiments and research with teleportation technology have had disastrous results. Initially released in 1998 by Sierra Studios for personal computers that use Windows, was later released for PlayStation 2. [2] Conversions for Mac OS X and Linux also became available in January 2013. [3]
At its launch, the game received universal acclaim, with critics praising flowless narrative without interruptions, presentation and realistic gameplay, receiving more than fifty prizes of Game of the Year for computer. Its gameplay has influenced the design of first-person shooter games for years after its release, and is widely considered one of the greatest games of all time. [6] [7] IGN ranked Half-Life as the biggest all-time first-person shooter, stating that "when you look at the history of first-person shooter games, it all comes down very clearly in pre-Half-Life eras and post-Half-Life. The game sold 8 million copies on November 16, 2004 and 9.3 million copies by December 2008. On July 14, 2006, the Half-Life franchise as a whole sold more than 20 million units [ 10] Half-Life was followed by the 2004 Half-Life 2 sequel, which also received universal critical acclaim.
